An American Monarchy - Coat of arms by Regicollis An American Monarchy - Coat of arms by Regicollis
What if the United States had been a monarchy instead of a republic? The concept is not completely outlandish. After all monarchy was the default form of government back when the United States seceded from British rule. There was also plans to offer the Prussian prince Henry the throne.

Had the continental congress elected a king the title is not unlikely to have been changed to emperor, once the nation grew westwards.

This is how a coat of arms of an American Empire could have looked like.

The double headed eagle you see there is the same one on the old Russian flag, before the communist uprising when they killed Czar Nicholas the 2nd and established a communist government with Vladimir Lenning.

My question is why would the Americans take it, rather than invent their own?  I thought the double headed eagle was from the Austro-Hungarian empire?Sherlock Holmes

Actually the origin of the double-headed eagle is found in Byzantine Greece and later adapted by Serbs & Russians by monarchical marriage or ecclesiastical relations. From these three its use spread. Typically identified with countries that are Orthodox Christian before the 20th Century.
